History

The name Svartekällan comes from Svartekällan’s Spa which is located in Apelviken, Varberg. That was where we lived when we started our kennel. Svartekällan was used as a spa already in the early 1800s. By horse and wagon people brought water from this well to the square in Varberg where the healthy water was distributed. The symbolism is our black dogs that keeps us healthy.

Our first Gordon Setter was Åshöjden O’Hara. We were used to dogs but we didn’t hunt. O’Hara learned the charm of a standing bird dog. She found birds early and we had to learn how to hunt and how hunting tests goes. She got her first prize in hunting test at the age of one. She received a total of ten prizes in hunting tests and two Certs on exhibitions and she became our first breeding she-dog. O’Hara had two puppy litters. She has brought her hunting interest on to her offspring. We kept her first puppy which became Svartekällan’s Zilla and is a class victory dog. O’Hara became ten years old. Our next dog was Skogvik’s Foxy derived from Åshöjden’s Kennel on both the mother’s and father’s side and she is a fantastic finder of game. She is the mother of Svartekällan’s Yatzy.
